Author Graham Whitlock interviewing Pat Cove about her memories visiting the Crystal Palace and watching the fires

MEMORIES OF VISITING THE CRYSTAL PALACE

Join us as 96-year-old Patricia Cove shares vivid, first-hand memories of the Crystal Palace — from childhood picnics and boating on the lake, to seeing the mighty Hindenburg soar overhead.

Click here to listen and also read about the dramatic day of the interview which coincided with another fire at the Crystal Palace . . .

“It was just a fantastic building… I remember sculptures in one part, which didn’t interest me much at that age. I remember seeing the big guns… and what struck me most was the trees — real, live trees growing inside a building. I’d never seen anything like that before.”

CRYSTAL PALACE PROGRAMME FROM 1930

My grandad sold programmes at the Crystal Palace and I like to imagine it would've been like this wonderful 44-page guide from 1930 by Henry James Buckland, General Manager.

It's a fascinating read which Buckland describes as 'representing an endeavour to put into concise form an account of ... this great and unique building (because) nowadays there is little or no time for the average person to wade through dull page of unending details.'

With photos of the grounds and Courts, I hope you enjoy travelling back in time, and a special thank-you to Mark Sawyer for sharing this programme.

CHRONICLES MAP

Ever since I was a kid I've always loved maps.

And it was whilst staring at a Victorian map of Crystal Palace and the surrounding area whilst volunteering at the Subway (one of the last remnants of the palace) that I came up with the idea of a time traveling teenager.

I'm therefore delighted to share with you the Chronicles Map showing sites visited by Joe on his time travel adventures, from Luranah Villa to Norwood New Town, plus places in Joe's own time including Paradise Bar and Restaurant.

Book Launch Celebration at The Crystal Palace Museum

Book Launch Celebration at The Crystal Palace Museum - It was a thrill to share Palace of Shadows in one of the last remaining remnants of the Crystal Palace, surrounded by its past and by people who are as passionate as me in wanting to bring it to life for the young and the young at heart.  And to have one of the books main characters Bertie - aka H. G. Wells-  lead my Q&A made it a night I’ll never forget (so glad he got his Time Machine working…)
